Unfortunately, I think you are right about stepparents not really having any rights to their stepchildren. I think it is this way because of the high rate of divorce. Contrary to what one may believe, the divorce rate is even higher for second marriages than the first ones (it seems that it's not always better the 2nd time around). The courts do not want to be bogged down with trying to give rights to people who may not be a permanent part of the child's life. So when you go to court, you have to make sure to advocate for more time or whatever for the biological noncustodial parent. Judges do not really care to hear about current boy/girlfriends, spouses, or significant others' wishes to spend time with the child. Unfortunately they are irrelevant (maybe I shouldn't say that),....judges tend to give little significance to the significant others (even when it's a spouse with children). I really believe it has a lot to do with the high rate of divorce, and I could almost understand the reasoning.
The Win Child Custody and Custody Evaluation Videos will prove invaluable for your case.
